“Braces set off metal detectors.” “I’ll have a higher chance of getting hit by lightning.” “Treatment takes, like, ten years.” You’ve probably heard a few of these orthodontic myths, which thankfully are not true (people with braces have the same chance of getting hit by lightning as those who don’t – one in 700,000!) We’re going to set the record (and more teeth) straight by busting three of the most common myths we hear.
- “Orthodontics will keep me from enjoying my favorite activities.” If you participate in sports, there’s no reason why orthodontic treatment should keep you out of the game – just wear an orthodontic mouth guard. Unlike traditional mouth guards, orthodontic guards are made with silicone and designed to protect your appliances. They also shield your lips and cheeks from rubbing against your brackets, wires and aligners, lessening the likelihood of cuts and sores.Play an instrument? You’ll be glad to know most patients continue to play throughout their treatment. It may take week or two to get used to playing your instrument with your braces or Invisalign® aligners, but you will adapt quickly.
- “I’m too old to consider orthodontic treatment.” According to the American Association of Orthodontists, nearly 1.5 million adults in the U.S. have braces! In fact, approximately 25 percent of today’s orthodontic patients are adults. Advancements in technology, innovations and design have made braces more affordable and comfortable than ever before.
- “I can’t eat the foods I love.” For those wearing traditional braces, we encourage avoiding hard, chewy and sticky foods. We also recommend against using your front teeth to bite into foods like corn on the cob and apples. Instead, cut these foods into smaller pieces and chew them using your back teeth. If your orthodontic treatment involves Invisalign aligners, you remove them when you eat or drink anything other than water, so there is no limitation on what you can eat.
