Palate Expanders Image - Starting Point

What is an Expander?

An expander is an appliance that fits across the roof of your mouth. It widens your palate to improve the way your upper and lower jaw and teeth fit together. You wear an expander for about 3-4 months. During the first two weeks you will be instructed to “activate” the appliance by turning it with a key. Each turn creates a millimeter of new space.

When is an expander used?

An expander may be recommended as part of your treatment plan if you have a narrow upper arch or if you are in cross-bite. Cross-bite is when either your skeletal structures or dental structures are in poor alignment causing your upper arch to make contact inside your lower arch.
