Although not our first choice, there are a few reasons we may recommend a tooth extraction. For example, if periodontal disease has infected a tooth or if damage to a tooth is beyond repair, an extraction may be the best course of action.
Often called pulling teeth, children and adults may eventually need a tooth extracted. That’s where Starting Point Pediatric Dentistry comes in.
We’ve been performing precise, comfortable tooth extractions in Kansas City for nearly 20 years. With expert care and experience, our staff will ensure your child gets back to a pain-free, beautiful smile!
Why pull baby teeth?
Sometimes your pediatric dentist or orthodontist will recommend that a child has a tooth pulled to prepare the mouth for orthodontics.
Another reason to extract a tooth is if an adult tooth cannot break through the gum (erupt) because there is not enough room due to a baby tooth that has stayed in too long.
Why pull adult teeth?
Although our permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are several reasons we perform tooth extractions in Kansas City.
While we will do everything we can to save a tooth, there are cases where a damaged tooth (from trauma or decay) is beyond repair.

A general dentist performs simple tooth extractions to remove visible teeth.
Also called complex extractions, involving removing impacted teeth that require an incision to access.
Before pulling a tooth, your child’s dentist will ensure that the area around the tooth is numb using a local anesthetic. Your child will be able to relax in our kid-friendly environment, and because we are specialists in treating kids and teens, we can use nitrous to help them relax if they show any signs of anxiety.
There are two types of tooth extractions—simple extractions and complex extractions.

A damaged or decaying tooth can cause intense pain or discomfort that an extraction can alleviate.
The goal of orthodontics is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if teeth don’t fit the mouth.
Removing a decayed or damaged tooth reduces harmful bacteria and prevents its spread to the gums or other teeth.

After tooth extraction, your child should take it easy for 48 to 72 hours to allow the area to clot. Then they may return to regular physical activity, expecting a 3-4 week total healing period.
We will provide you with post-care instructions to keep the extraction site clean by gently rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash several times a day and being prescribed any necessary medication to promote healing and pain management.
