#1 Family Dentist in Overland Park: Cavities “Worms” Explained

Cavities are caused by bacteria that live in our mouths.

I like to think of them as little worms.

There are worms that live in our mouths.

The worms do not eat your teeth, not exactly.

The worms only eat sugar. Or honey, high fructose corn syrup, dried fruits, gummy bears, soda, granola bars, or even sticky simple carbohydrates like crackers because we have an enzyme in our spit that cuts the simple carbohydrates into sugars to start the digestive process.

And then what?

Like all living things, the worms POOP.

The worms poop on our teeth.

And that poop is very acidic.

The worm poop melts your teeth.

The acidity of the poop takes minerals out of your teeth slowly. Over time, the tooth gets soft. And then the tooth can crumble and break.

Once your tooth breaks and we can see the hole with our eyes or x-rays (or non-radiation imaging like we use at our office) we call it a “cavity.”

A cavity is a hole in your tooth caused by acidic worm poop.

This is actually my mom’s analogy that I have adapted because it is phenomenal and so is my mom.
